5 ways to build values that win loyalty and new business

Brand loyalty through strong core valuesHaving clear values help build brand loyalty. Whether a micro business or one listed on the FTSE 100, values are like having a compass for guiding decisions and actions. They are hugely important in providing motivation and direction and yet many businesses just pay lip service or even dismiss them all together.

When people are clear about workplace values they can focus on the things that really matter rather than wasting time on lower priorities.

  1. Involve your people in the development of values – Imposing values top down will have little effect on engagement. Involving employee representatives will give your people a voice. For smaller businesses get your people talking about ‘how we do things around here’.
  2. Include values in your recruitment and selection process – It’s much easier to train someone to improve skills and knowledge than it is to change their values.

Help your people understand how they can align their own personal values with those of the businessMany of your people won’t share all of the business values even if they are part of your recruitment process. However, if they can understand how their own values can be lived out in alignment with those of the business then they’ll be much more engaged in delivery.
  5. Let your values shine through in what you say and doIt’s no good having ‘stated’ values if when it comes to important decisions they’re just ignored. Ensure the values are used in decision making then communicate with employees, customers and other stakeholders in a way that helps them understand business decisions and actions.

When employees, customers and other stakeholders get a feel for and connect with your values it helps to them to build meaning in choosing to do business with you. This can play a part in greater loyalty, retention and word of mouth to win new business.
